Greek Authorities Boost Protection After Protests Against Israeli Passenger Liner

Hellenic officials have dramatically enhanced safety arrangements at multiple key harbors in an initiative to prevent demonstrators from approaching a cruise liner carrying visitors from Israel on an 11-day Mediterranean journey.

Latest Protests Trigger Increased Protection

The security reinforcement at the Peloponnesian ports was implemented following previous protests when the MS Crown Iris arrived in Kalamata earlier this week. Previously, passengers aboard the same vessel were prevented from disembarking and the liner was compelled to change course to Cyprus after local residents staged a protest on the Aegean isle of Syros.

"In spite of the ceasefire, Israel is maintaining its military operations in Gaza," remarked a schoolteacher who participated in the Kalamata demonstration. "Civilian, non-combatant people are being slain."

Passenger Experience and Popular Sentiment

Aboard the ship, travelers watched as crowds in Kalamata shouted: "You need the police, you're not welcome in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who worked throughout summer arranging anti-war protests across Greece, stated: "Israeli visitors who endorse the actions of their administration aren't welcome here."

International Background and Foreign Ties

An international relations expert explained: "Because of geographic proximity and our traditional ties with the Arab world, the ordinary Greek person is more attuned to what is happening in Gaza than the average European from central or northern regions."

"The Hellenic Republic is in a difficult position," he continued. "Israel is much more important for us as an ally than it is for most European states."

Economic and Tourism Consequences

Government statistics reveal that over 600,000 Israeli visitors traveled to Greece in 2024, with forecasts of greater tourism this year. This significant arrival highlights the significantly enhanced ties between the two nations since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a firmly pro-Palestinian policy.

Strategic Alliance and Regional Factors

From Athens' perspective, Israel serves as not only a significant counterbalance to neighboring competitor Turkey but also grants the supplementary bonus of improved diplomatic access to Washington.

"Greece is not going to jeopardize its relations with Israel," commented the analyst. "But from a humanitarian perspective we must be more accepting, more equitable, more determined to demonstrate the misdeeds of Israel in Gaza."

Growing Demonstration Campaign and Global Response

The magnitude of the Greek protest movement has caught Israel off guard. Lately, the nation's diplomatic department warned tourists to maintain a low profile, while national news outlets referred to Athens as a "former paradise" due to protest markings appearing on edifices in the urban center.

Victor Eliezer of the Hebrew Communities Council in Greece expressed concern: "Certainly we're concerned. The sort of rhetoric we're experiencing can quickly turn into antisemitic."

Upcoming Events and Requests

Gradually, critics have aimed at Athens' strong connections with Israel. Approximately 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to demand the termination of the Souda Bay military facility, a NATO establishment that since the outbreak of hostilities in Gaza has operated as a crucial replenishment point for US naval vessels, fighter planes and ships destined for Israel.

"There have been victories," declared Petros Constantinou. "Our primary request, at present, is to stop any collaboration with Israel."
