The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was took office without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the moment, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
